1. Which fitness subscription fits your budget?

Cheap gyms are popular, however current trends show that some providers are increasing membership prices following the pandemic. Most major fitness chains are sticking to their offers though.

2. What are the differences between the main gyms in Switzerland?

One in ten people in Switzerland has a gym membership. Fitness enthusiasts have some 1,200 gyms and fitness studios to choose from. The services offered are diverse, reflecting the widely varying needs of their customers.

The biggest fitness chains account for over a quarter of all the gyms in the whole of Switzerland. The cost of an annual membership ranges from 498 to 1,790 francs. The services included in an annual membership also vary significantly. Some gyms may include free trials, group classes, saunas, childcare, drinks and so on in their memberships, while others offer a much more limited range of services.

This means it's a good idea to find out in advance which gym is right for you, and not just decide based on the price.

3. Group classes and wellness: what's on offer at gyms?

In addition to individual training, many gyms also offer group fitness classes, which are often included in the membership fee. Popular classes include aerobics, Bodypump, Pilates, yoga, Zumba, step and spinning.

Wellness services such as saunas, steam baths, solariums and quiet zones are not available in every fitness studio. Some gyms offer integrated nutritional advice as an add-on, or have a swimming pool. Massage chairs, tennis courts, a hot tub and TRX or vibration training are also popular.

Good to know:

the most important thing when choosing the right gym is how you feel and what you're looking for. Do you want to be surrounded by bodybuilders, only train alongside women or put your health first? Should the atmosphere be anonymous or friendly? After all, the best fitness studio is the one you keep going back to.

4. When and how much does health insurance pay?

Whether or not your health insurer will make a contribution to your gym membership usually depends on two factors.

Does your gym have a quality label?

Your health insurer will only pay if the gym or fitness centre has been quality-certified. The most well-known certification is Qualitop/QualiCert, but other certifications like EMfit and Fitness-Guide are sometimes also accepted.
